A guide to creating successful champions

As digital twin technology continues to transform offshore energy projects, the difference between effectively implementing a new platform into everyday use, and a new tool being underused and underexplored often comes down to one critical factor: people.

Internal champions understand the value of not only improving efficiency and collaboration, but also how digital tools can bridge departmental and project divides. These ‘super users’ are ready to drive digital transformation from within.

Acting as the linchpins of organizational adoption and advocates for streamlined change management, champions translate the technical capabilities of new technology into meaningful, day-to-day business value.

But how do you identify the right individuals, nurture them effectively and set them up to lead a successful digitalization effort?

What makes a super user?

For FutureOn, a FieldTwin super user is an internal advocate who deeply understands both the platform and the broader operational context of their organization. They are not simply users of the software, instead connecting the platform’s capabilities with real-world workflows and business objectives.

We find that champions typically possess four defining traits:

  • Openness: They are receptive to change and view digitalization not just as a tool, but as a pathway to transform legacy processes.
  • Proactiveness: These individuals anticipate challenges and look for improvements before others even recognize a need.
  • Resilience: Navigating the change management process across existing systems and cross teams requires perseverance and adaptability.
  • Ownership: They take personal responsibility for the platform’s success, often driving adoption efforts without being formally tasked to do so.

Super users may come from any professional background, and while technical skills help, it’s this unique combination of mindset and behaviour that sets them apart.

Nurturing champions from day one

Developing a super user doesn’t happen overnight. On average, it takes about a year for someone to progress from basic familiarity to confidently leading internal adoption efforts of FieldTwin. This timeline reflects not just platform learning, but also building internal credibility, developing best practices and integrating FieldTwin into formal workflows.

Many champions begin their journey informally by volunteering time alongside their regular duties. Over time, their influence grows as they accumulate expertise and demonstrate FieldTwin’s potential to solve real business and operational problems. These champions become internal salespeople for FieldTwin, capable of articulating what the platform replaces, how it enhances workflows and why it’s worth the effort to adopt.

In this sense, a successful champion is one who sees the bigger picture and understands the digital thread that FieldTwin enables across project teams. And as digitalization inevitably disrupts, within organizations burdened by silos or legacy data fragmentation, FieldTwin champions are the connectors. They advocate for collaborative and unified workflows that scale across business units.

Working together

FutureOn is committed to empowering super users across our customers, by providing:

  • Training and collaboration: Beyond initial onboarding, FutureOn offers continuous touchpoints via product councils, integration workshops and on-site office visits. These support systems help champions learn, iterate and scale.
  • Culture of partnership: Super users are empowered when they see FutureOn not just as a vendor, but as a partner. Our team becomes a trusted sounding board, helping champions tailor FieldTwin to their specific needs.
  • Feedback loops: Whether it’s suggesting features or co-developing integration plans, champions’ insights feed directly into our development pipeline.

Digital twin platforms like FieldTwin offer immense potential, but only if people are empowered to unlock it. Super users are the human multipliers of that potential. Identifying them early, investing in their growth and enabling them to navigate the complexities of change is not just a good strategy but it’s essential to long-term success.
